Abies GRANDIS
A delightful subject for Christmas tree purposes, lasting well in containers for some years before eventually being planted out to provide a spectacular and very handsome specimen tree. The dark green shiny leaves have glaucous-grey undersides and are noted for the fragrance when crushed. Fast growing, shade tolerant and easily grown in good, well-drained soils. Hardy. Evergreen.
Acer CAMPBELLII SSP. WILSONII
A large shrub or small tree of 4-5m with distinctive 3-lobed leaves of a very deep, blackish-green colouring. Flowers are a yellow-green shade. A rare maple that requires some shelter and is a worthy addition to any maple collection. Deciduous. Hardy.
Acer CAMPESTRE
Field Maple
A very ornamental medium sized tree occasionally used to advantage in distinctive hedges. Sometimes also used as a compact, smaller street tree and increasing in popularity. Light, greenish-brown bark is sometimes 'corky'. Clear yellow autumn foliage may be tinted red. Easily grown in most soil types. Deciduous. 10 - 12m.
Acer CAPILLIPES
A 'Snakebark' maple
One of the beautiful 'Snakebark' maples. A multi-stemmed, densely branched, small tree of up to 8 or 10m. The conspicuously silver/green striped bark with small, orange spots is a feature. Foliage is 3 or 5-lobed and lightly serrated. Cream flowers and small winged, typical maple seeds. Native to mountainous regions of Japan. Deciduous. Hardy.
Acer CAPPADOCICUM
A lovely species that is noted for the broad, 5 to 7 lobed, glossy leaves that turn to a rich, butter-yellow shade in autumn. Hardy. Deciduous.
Acer CAPPADOCICUM RUBRUM
Notable for the gorgeous purple coloured young leaves which assume dark green shadings as they mature. Widely planted in parks, avenues, streets and gardens. Given the Royal Horticultural Society 'Award of Garden Merit' in 1984. 15m. Hardy. Deciduous.
Acer DAVIDII
Father David's Maple
A multi-trunked, small tree with green or purplish-red bark attractively striped with white, darkening with age. Dark green, glossy leaves are also attractive. These plants are a selected form with particularly colourful, orange autumn foliage. Cold hardy. Deciduous. 8m.
Acer DAVIDII SILVER LINING
New Introduction for 2006 by Allenton Nurseries
A chance seedling of the cultivar 'Silver Ghost' resulted in this stunning selection with beautifully striped bark of frosted silver and green with vivid pink young shoots. Colours are much more intense than the parent plant. Attractive heart-shaped foliage. Forms a multi-branched small tree of 8 - 10m. Deciduous. Hardy. Limited numbers.
Acer GRISEUM
Paper Bark Maple
A species noted for the very distinctive, papery, orange-brown bark that peels off in curled sheets. The dark green leaves are a pale, grey-green on the undersides and assume stunning autumn shades of orange, red and yellow. A highly regarded small tree that is easily grown in most gardens. Slender growth habit to 6m. Deciduous. Hardy.
Acer JAPONICUM ACONITIFOLIUM
Fern Leaf Maple
This maple has very distinctive, ornamental leaves of deep green with very deeply cut lobes and toothed margins. Rich autumn colours in crimson tones are an added bonus. A deciduous, small, shrubby tree of up to 10m max. Hardy.
